Dr. Lin Wei spent 17 years at a state-owned special steel plant in Liaoning, managing the vacuum melting department. By 2002, he was sourcing superalloy fasteners for a petrochemical reformer tube project, and rejecting over 40% of incoming bolts from three different suppliers. The failures were always the same: oxide stringers in the thread root, subsurface laps from poor forging practice, and MTCs that couldn't be reconciled with actual chemistry. In 2003, Dr. Lin left the plant and started RAS Thermal with one VIM furnace and a single CNC lathe. His thesis: if you control the melt, the forge, and the heat treatment under one roof, you control the quality. Twenty-plus years later, that thesis is our production record.
Every decision starts with the phase diagram. We do not compromise on inclusion cleanliness or grain size, because a 50-micron inclusion cluster is the crack that grounds a fleet. Our VIM+ESR/VAR route is not marketing. It is the minimum we would accept for a bolt going into our own engine.
From the moment raw alloying elements enter our furnace to the moment a finished bolt leaves our dock, every process step is logged. Heat number, furnace ID, operator badge, forging lot, CNC spindle, inspection report, all linked in a single digital thread. If a customer asks about a bolt installed 8 years ago, we can reconstruct its entire manufacturing history within 24 hours.
We do not sell bolts. We solve fastener problems. When a gas turbine OEM spent six months chasing a creep-failure root cause, our metallurgy team identified a grain-boundary carbide precipitation issue in the competitor's supplied stud, then developed a custom heat-treatment cycle that eliminated it. That solution became the OEM's material specification. No upcharge. No NDA drama. Just engineering work that needed doing.
Since 2016, we have reinvested an average of 22% of annual revenue into capital equipment: a second VAR furnace (2020), a Zeiss CONTURA G2 CMM (2021), an automated UT scanning cell (2022), and a 2,500-ton hot forging press (2023). We measure ROI in microns, so every new machine must reduce a tolerance band by at least 30% or it is not bought.
