A missed inclusion or an under-rolled thread root is not a customer complaint, it is a failure of the quality system. We designed ours so that a defect cannot reach the shipping dock.
Each pillar below represents a mandatory inspection gate. Skip one, and the lot does not ship. This is not a menu, it is a sequence.
Every shipment includes a Type 3.1 Mill Test Certificate as standard, signed by our authorized quality representative. The MTC reports: chemical composition (OES, all specified elements), tensile properties (ASTM E8: UTS, YS, elongation, reduction of area), hardness (Rockwell C / Brinell), and grain size (ASTM E112). For customers requiring third-party witness testing, we issue EN 10204 Type 3.2 certificates with SGS, TÜV Rheinland, or Bureau Veritas sign-off. The cert links back to the heat number, forging lot, and final inspection report, a single digital thread from raw alloy to finished bolt.
Every finished bolt, not a sample and not a statistical lot, undergoes Positive Material Identification via handheld XRF (Olympus Vanta, Niton XL5) or mobile OES (Bruker Q4 Tasman) for critical grades. This confirms the alloy chemistry at the part level, eliminating any possibility of a mixed-grade event. For nickel-based superalloys (Inconel 718, 625, X-750), we verify Ni, Cr, Fe, Nb, Mo, Ti, and Al against the mill cert. PMI data is logged to the serial-numbered inspection record. No PMI pass means no shipment. This policy has been in place since 2017 and has caught two near-misses, both from raw material received from a certified mill with a paperwork error.
All studs and bolts above M24 diameter receive 100% volumetric ultrasonic inspection per ASTM E114 (straight-beam contact method) or ASTM A388 (for large forging blanks). Our automated UT scanning cell, commissioned in 2022, uses a 5 MHz dual-element transducer with a 0.5 mm scanning index over the entire shank and head-to-shank transition zone. Defects as small as 0.8 mm flat-bottom-hole equivalent are flagged, and the A-scan waveform is stored with the inspection record. Manual UT is performed by ASNT Level II-certified inspectors for geometries that cannot be auto-scanned.
One sample per heat-treatment lot is sectioned, mounted, polished, and etched for optical microscopy. We verify: grain size per ASTM E112 (target ASTM 8 or finer for superalloy grades), absence of grain-boundary carbide precipitation (sensitization check), inclusion content per ASTM E45 Method A (target Severity <=1.5 for all inclusion types), and case/core microstructure for surface-hardened grades. Photomicrographs at 100x and 500x are archived with the lot record. A microstructure that does not match the approved reference is grounds for lot rejection, regardless of mechanical test results. We have seen bolts pass tensile but fail metallography with continuous grain-boundary films that would cause intergranular cracking under sustained load. The tensile test cannot see what the microscope sees.
All critical dimensions are verified on a Zeiss CONTURA G2 coordinate measuring machine (CMM) with a VAST XT gold scanning head. The CMM program is generated from the customer's 3D model or drawing, and every tolerance field is checked, not sampled and not go/no-go gauged, but measured and reported with the actual value. Standard verification covers: thread pitch diameter, major and minor diameters, root radius, under-head radius, shank straightness, bearing surface flatness, and overall length. For production runs, in-process probing on the CNC cell provides real-time dimensional feedback. The CMM inspection report, with the customer's own tolerance zones overlaid, ships with the MTC.
We welcome third-party inspectors. For critical-service fasteners (pressure-boundary bolting in ASME Section III applications, rotating-component studs in gas turbines, or petrochemical reformer tube bolting), customers routinely assign SGS, TÜV Rheinland, or Bureau Veritas inspectors to witness testing. Our QA team has a dedicated inspector coordination desk: the inspector receives the testing schedule in advance, has unrestricted access to all test equipment, witnesses the tests they select, stamps the certs, and signs the final release note. We do not pre-select parts for third-party witness. The inspector walks the rack and points. This is the fastest way to prove our quality system works, and we invite scrutiny because the data hold up.
